Collagen is the connective tissue that gives skin its
tone, thickness and elasticity. The process of collagenesis
plumps the skin, which in turn, reduces wrinkles. Studies
show that estrogen increases the activity of skin fibroblasts,
cells that produce collagen. As we age, our declining
levels of estrogen associated with menopause are linked
to a decline in skin integrity and function.
Topical forms of non-synthetic estrogen creams using estriol,
one of the estrogens produced by the body, can be compounded.
This cream, available by prescription, is known to produce
similar beneficial effects on facial skin without raising
the level of estrogen in the body.
In one study, topical estrogen appeared to increase the
amount of collagen in skin with marked improvement in
skin elasticity and firmness after six months of treatment.
The study showed topical estrogen cream: •
Decreased wrinkle depth and pore size by 61% to 100%
• Increased skin thickness by 7% to 15%
• Increased skin lipid sebum production by
35% • Markedly improved skin hydration
