Simply put, it is the act of creating a customized prescription that can be tailored to meet individual needs and usually, solve a medication problem. Upon receipt of a physician’s prescription, the pharmacist custom makes the medication from scratch using pharmaceutical-grade chemicals or a manufactured medication as the base. It’s made into the dosage form – capsules, a liquid suspension, lozenges, topical creams, even chewables – that provides the maximum benefit from the medication that’s been prescribed.
